Introduction : |
Orchha, a small 16th century town, built by the Bundela dynasty’s Rajput ( a fierce fighter clan) king, Rudra Partap, is located by the river Betwa in the state of Madhya Pardesh. The town served as the capital of the Bundela kingdom and today stands frozen in time with its rich legacy of medieval times.
“Orchha”, meaning “Hidden” was the hallmark |

of Bundela dynasty. The origin of Bundelas in the 11th century is traced to a Rajput prince who offered himself in sacrifice to the mountain goddess Vrindavasini. It is believed the goddess stopped the prince from sacrificing and named him Bundela (meaning, the one who offered blood). The Bundelas ruled over the area between the river Yamuna and Narmada, which is largely in
present day’s state of Madhya Pardesh.
Once the earlier capital of Bundelas, Garhkurar, fell to Tughlaqs, the dynasty retreated to come back again and expand their empire, although moving the capital this time to Orchha.
The town with its monuments captured in stone, being generally plastered, is different from other structures of the dynasty in the region by the virtue of this trait.
The town can be considered a “hidden jewel” in an Indian travel itinerary, with architectural wonders and a sleepy village set up perfectly in the background.
Even though this town is constantly overlooked by most of the tourist heading to Khajuraho, the town is fairly well connected to Delhi by the virtue of being only 18 kms from Jhansi, which in turn can be done via a super-fast Shatabdi train in less than 5 hours.
