Agra

Agra  is not only the erstwhile capital of Hindustan  it is also the present  tourism capital of the country. The city situated  on the banks of the river Yamuna in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India, is located about 200 kilometers  south of  the national capital New Delhi.

It achieved fame as the capital of the Mughal emperors from 1526 to 1658 and remains a major tourist destination because of its many splendid Mughal-era buildings, most notably the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur  Sikri, all three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

In terms of items for shopping, Agra is famous for two main things- its inlay work and Carpets and Dhurries.
Pietra dura or pietre dure, is a term for the inlay technique of using cut and fitted, highly-polished colored stones to create images. It is considered a decorative art. This art is extensively used in Taj Mahal and still replicated by local artisans in their work. Marble decorative plates and other items like jewelry boxes, table tops, and other small sculptures of marble with inlay work are created locally in Agra.

Agra is also famous for its Carpets and Dhurries. The city has been a centre of this art of making carpets and Dhurries since the Mughal days. There is a wide range of traditional and modern designs at display.
Main areas for shopping for all these items are Sadar Bazar, Kinari Bazaar and Munro Road.
“Zardoji”, the art of embroidery with cotton and silk threads is another expertise available in this town. Free hand sketches are converted into beautiful pieces of design by carefully employing cotton and silk threads to create a piece of desired thickness, by artisans in the city.
Agra is famous for its traditional desert made out of Pumpkin and called “Petha”. “Panchi Petha” is the famous brand that is synonymous with this desert. “Petha” is available in two main tastes “Angoori” and “Kesar”.
