Maharana Udai Singh II built Udaipur in 1568 after his citadel Chittorgarh was attacked by Mughal Emperor Akbar, it was doomed by numerous attacks. The folklores tell tales of Udai Singh being guided by a holy man meditating on the hill near Pichola Lake to establish and move his capital to this very spot. Maharana Udai Singh’s demise in 1572 led to subsequent Mughal attacks and was
valiantly defended by Maharana Pratap, successor to the throne. Maharana Pratap is the most revered Rajput icon who fought gallantly with the Mughals at the Haldighati in 1576.The city of Udaipur has a grand chivalrous history of blood bath battles until the British intervened signing a treaty to protect Udaipur.
Udaipur’s history was also blessed with the fact that Aravali Ranges, forests and lakes made this place less vulnerable than Chittorgarh thereby allowing Sisodia dynasty to rule for over 1200 years on Mewar.
Today,the magnificent City Palace situated on the banks compliments the citadel along with the Monsoon Palace (Sajjan Garh) on the hill. The City palace is inhabited by the Royal family of Udaipur who have a marvellous collection of vintage cars on display.
Udaipur is also a favorite hot joint for film makers. Some of the famous movies have had some shots filmed here like “James Bond - Octopussy”, “The Jungle Book”. All the elements of nature together make a picture perfect location. Some of the most exotic locations within and around the city are the must visits for travelers.
