Sree Padmanabha Swami Temple:
This over 270 year old temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu was built in 1733. The temple exhibits fine traits of Dravidian architecture with towers as tall as 30 meters at the main entrance. Puthe Maliga Palace Museum:
This over 200 years old palace of the King of Travancore is now converted into a museum and hosts an annual Classical Music festival. The palace is renowned for its unique Kerala architecture and its exhibits reflect the spice trade with China and Europe.
Veli Tourist village:
This little village is situated by the seaside, 9 Kms from the city. The park with its beautiful landscape is a popular picnic spot and carries sculptures by local artist Canai Kunuram. The place is well connected by buses that can be boarded from the bus station at East Fort.
Napier Museum:
This Kerala style building, dating 1880, carries a collection of bronzes, temple carts, ornaments and dressed-figure of Kathakali dancers. The museum is open all days from 10 in the morning till 5 in the evening. It is closed on Monday and Wednesday morning.
Also located on the museum grounds is the Sree Chithira Art Gallery carrying a collection of all sorts of paintings from renowned artists like Raja Ravi Varma and Roerich to Tanjore paintings to eastern collection from Japan, China and Indonesia.
The Indian School of Martial Arts:
The Indian School of Martial Arts or ISMA was established in 1983 as a training centre for the over 5000 year old martial art, Kalarippayattu. The centre is situated in a three-storied building with a traditional Kalari (the area for practicing the art) built below ground level. The massage table here is believed to be over 600 years old, carved out of a single tree and handed over through generations.
One of the biggest attractions of the place is the ancient palm leaf manuscripts (Olagranthas). The centre is located at Vazhuthacaud, about 2 Kms from the station.
CVN Kalari Sangham:
Located at East Fort, at a walking distance from the bus station, the place houses a Kalari (a practice ring for the art of Kalarippayattu). The place hosts demonstrations and lectures from 6 to 9 in the morning and 5 to 7 in the evening.
The centre also provides courses for the martial art and treatment for physical ailments through the ancient Ayurvedic system of massages and herbs.
East Fort:
The Fort area in Thiruvananthapuram has been declared a heritage site by the state government. The area houses palaces, palatial houses and Agraharams (or the houses of Priests). With several little palaces all having their own name and history and with other monuments in the background, the area has a picturesque setting. |
