Permit, available from the American or Canadian Automobile Association, is necessary.
4. Kolkata is the last city on earth to use enormous Chinese-style rickshaws pulled by men on foot. Please keep in mind that is a terribly difficult task and do not rush the driver.
5. Kolkata observes numerous national and religious holidays, when the commercial world shuts down. So please inquire before you start for a market place or a bank.
Most museums are closed on Mondays and site museums (near archaeological monuments) are normally closed on Fridays.
6. Business hours of shops, markets, and bazaars vary.
7. If you are welcomed into a house, try to observe the rules governing the seating. Often men sit separate from women. If in doubt, ask. Don't be surprised if the woman of the house serves her guests but doesn't join the gathering.
8. Stay away from ice, uncooked food, and unpasteurized milk and milk products, and drink only water that has been bottled.
9. Please be aware of your surroundings and belongings at all times. There are many poor in the city who may try to fleece a tourist.
