applied to control the blooming trade of the west coast.
Legendary Vasco da Gama was the first of the Portuguese who landed here to establish trade. It was under Portuguese influence that the place developed as its cultivation of ginger, coconut, pepper, and spices, thereby providing impetus
to trade in the region. Apart from these today the region also specializes in cultivation of Tobacco, Cashew nuts, Pineapple, Coir and other fruits.
Cochin, which was an independent state before 1956, was combined with other independent states of Travancore and Malabar to create the present day’s state of Kerala. Today the city boasts of sizeable influence of Portuguese, Dutch and Jewish communities. The ‘Chinese fishing nets’ in use everywhere on the coast, is another much talked about and popular site with tourists.
