Digambara sect. The temple although not as grand as the western Temples , some of the figures here are perhaps the best known figures of Khajuraho , including the classic figures of a women removing a thorn from her foot and another of a women applying make-up.
Parshvanath Temple, Adinath Temple and Shantinath Temple forms the set of Jain temples in this Eastern Group.
Right on the edge of the Old Village lays the Ghanatai Temple. Although in ruins, its pillared shell still remains and poses an interesting semblance with its carved bell and chains motifs.
The Javari and Vamana Temples are not very far from here. The Vamana Temple (built around 1075AD) enshrines a dwarf, which is believed to be an incarnation of Vishnu. The Javeri Temple, which was also built around the same time, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Brahma Temple, not far from here, actually houses a four-faced lingam, which is actually symbolic of Shiva and has nothing to do with Brahma.
3) The Southern Group Temples:
The Southern Group only holds two temples, the Duladeva Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the Chaturbhuj Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Duladeva Temple is located by the tiny river Khuddar. It was built by Madan Varman in 1130 and displays variety of women figures and Mithunas. Although the experts do not consider the quality as good as that of the earlier temples, the temple still holds its charm through its ‘wooden’ sculptures.
Chaturbhuj Temple located 2 Km south of the river, holds an impressive 10-ft icon of Vishnu as an ascetic.
4) The Museums:
There are three museums you can’t visit once you are done with viewing the originals.
The ASI Museum opposite Western Group carries sculptures which can be viewed at eye level. The Jain Museum holds 100’s of Jain figures, and the state Museum of Tribal and Folk Art boasts of its collection of tribal artifacts in terracotta, metal craft, woodcraft, masks, paintings and jewellery.
