Jodhpur was once known as Marwar, which means 'Land of Death', referring to the harsh desert climate. It was founded in 1459 A.D. by Rao Jodha-chief of the Rathore. The Rathore's belong to the branch of the Kshatriyas Suryavansha (solar race), the warrior caste of Hindus as the descendants of Ram. Rao Ganga Singh of Jodhpur (reigned 1516-32) fought alongside the army of the great warrior king of Mewar, Rana Sanga, against the first Mughal emperor, Babur. But over the next half century, the rulers of Jodhpur allied themselves with Babur's grandson, Akbar and enjoyed the autonomy for a while. Jodhpur benefited from this exposure to the wider world of new styles and talent of art and architecture which can be reflected in some of the monuments. Opportunities opened up for local tradesmen to make their mark across northern India as it was strategically closely linked to Gujarat and Delhi. During Aurangzeb’s era when Mughals were losing its powers Marwar joined Marathas to drive them out of the state. With 1947 independence, the state merged unto the union of India and Jodhpur became the second city of Rajasthan even though it is still a princely state under Maharaja Gaj Singh occupying a grandeur part of Umaid Bhawan Palace.
The ballpark figure for furniture export would be around $200 million giving employment to nearly 200,000 locals.
The local dialects are Marwari and Hindi but Jodhpur being a tourist place people do understand English even if they can’t speak proficiently. This city is buzzing with tourists between October to March when the weather is a lot cooler and the prices do go up a bit. You need to be an expert in haggling to be able to get yourself the best rates for hotel stay if you have not made prior reservations and while shopping from the pavements or else you can get fleeced.
