Introduction : |
Jaisalmer is a poetry re-written on sandy deserts of “Sam”. Founded by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 A.D., Jaisalmer remained untouched from outside influences until it agreed to sign the Instrument of Agreement with the British.
Years back Jaisalmer was strategically located between India and Central Asia

powerful.
The chivalry of Rajput's mostly inhabited by “Bhatti” clan glorifies this city.
Rawal Jaisal, a Bhatti Rajput, was a descendant of the Yadu Vamsi clan. According to a popular legend, Lord Krishna had prophesized that a descendant of the Yadav clan will establish his citadel atop the Trikuta hill and Rawal Jaisal
build the Jaisalmer fort in 1156 A.D., shifted his capital from Lodurva (16 km away) to Trikuta Hill. Jaisalmer has been under the sieges of
Allaud-din Khilji (1295 A.D.-1315 A.D.), Sultan Ferozeshah's camp at Anasagar Lake, near Ajmer followed by Jauhars. The Bhatti Rajputs of Jaisalmer grew rich living off the revenues earned by forcing levies on the great caravans that traveled the ancient Spice Route on their way to imperial Delhi. This happened till the time when their days of glory came to an end with the burgeoning of the shipping trade through the port at Mumbai.
Today, the crowning glory of the city is reflected through the medieval architectural history of “Haveli”, “Jharoka”, “Fort”, “Chhatris” and Temples
Jaisalmer Fort, the symbol of the city’s affluence in the medieval days, stands magnificently with yellow sandstone walls and bastions gleaming by the yellow golden hues of a setting sun giving this fort a name - Sonar Kila (Golden Fort). Jaisalmer the city stands unusually exotic on the 80 meter high Trikuta hill protecting the palace and several ornately sculpted Jain temples. Medieval majesty is visible through the life of the citadels, narrow lanes strewn with magnificent palaces, Haveli's, temples, talented artisans and omnipresence of camels. |
