Jaisalmer lies in the heart of Thar Desert, with scantiest of rainfall measuring only upto 15 cms thereby not allowing any irrigation to take place. During the independence and Pakistan partition time, Jaisalmer’s trade link was cut sealing the faith of the city. The partition also resulted in a drought which happened as a result of loss of water connectivity via Pakistan. It was then that the Indira Gandhi canal was relayed from north getting life back to the desert.
Tourism is the main industry in Jaisalmer. Camel safaris are popular with tourists. Some hotels also organize camps at the desert with meals and entertainment to enjoy the real cultural experience with bonfire and performances by local Rajasthani dancers and singers
Tourist season in this area begins from October to March but the best time to visit Jaisalmer is around January to February during Desert Fair. An event that one should not miss if making a trip to India. Human race from world over, from different walks of life come in concert to be a curator of the color splattered, creating its own shape on the brown canvas sand like a painting of Monet. The experience is overwhelming.
The local dialects are Marwari and Hindi but Jodhpur being a tourist place people do understand English even if they can’t speak proficiently. Jaisalmer epitomizes the desert romance amidst past wars singing ballads bringing spirits to life.
