| + CULTURAL TIPS |
Religion forms an important part in the lives of people in India. It is for this very reason that it is important to take care of the societal norms when attending a religious place or ceremony. It is important to remove your shoes when entering a religious place in India. Even if you are unaware you will see people taking off their shoes before entering the premises of a religious place and that will be your reminder. Also wash your hands after removing your shoes.
One should also dress up in proper attire ( not something that is skimpy or real short). It is generally better to be dressed conservatively.
At some places you might be required to cover your head. If taking bath/ dip in some religious place, exercise constraint to swim. It is generally a place where you should take just a dip (preferably be clothed to avoid any see-through or skin show) and not necessarily get into your swim wear. Again all these are not rules set in stone but plain advice to enable you to stay away from any embarrassing situation or untoward incident.
Make sure you don’t go skinny dipping in any places which are thronged by general public. Of course you can take your chances in places like Goa or perhaps some secluded or exclusive beach. It is highly advisable to carry your swimsuit to indulge in swimming. It is important to exercise some basic photography etiquette. Restrain from clicking pictures of individuals without their permission. ‘A guest is an avatar of God’ is an old adage that is still exercised in lots of households in India. If you are visiting someone’s house or living with someone it is important to respect the sanctity of your host’s household. Generally people are laid back and not necessarily have the resources to match up with your expenditure level. It is always a good gesture to bring a small gift for your host family. Also it is advisable to bring your bottled water & toilet paper as these are not the common things available in all households and you do not want to add to the expenses of your host. Of course the situation is different at different households and it is advisable to ask your host if you have any doubts.
The IdiscoverIndia.com’s ‘Travel Host’ program allows you to find a family that
you can live with or spend time with for a great insight into the lives of people in India. It is advisable that you take your Cab/Taxi to the host family house rather than asking them to pick you up. Of course you can ask them for suggestions (if they can let you know of a Cab service) or accept their offer in case they offer to pick you up.
A general assessment of the living conditions will give you a good idea of what to expect. Use your discretion and try not to have your host family have to spend money on you. Wait for suggestions from your host family if they want to take you out and to know where that would be. Paying could be tricky in such situations, it is hard to go ‘dutch’ so either you stress on splitting the bill or offer all on your own. Remember ‘disposable income’ is very low in India when compared with its western counter parts, so even a $ 10 can be a lot of money for some people to afford.
So we believe that all the info above has given you enough information to have a pleasant stay during your trip to India. In case you will still have questions@IdiscoverIndia.com . |
