| + CULTURAL TIPS |
Traveling in India exposes you to both diversity and disparity. Every area or place has its unique calling, its own language, dialect, scenic diversity, flora & fauna ,customs and traditions.
However amidst all this diversity there is a binding factor of ‘Indianness’.This
amalgamation of different cultures and spirits is what has come to be known as ‘India”. Amidst all this it is important to keep in mind a few things that ensure you to exercise common sense in unfamiliar situations and extend common courtesy to others.
Wherever you are in doubt about how you should behave, just ask the locals or watch what the locals do. This will always give you a fair idea about what’s acceptable and what’s not. Some of the things that will give you an insight into acceptable norms are as below:
Don’t be surprised by the unusual attention you will receive while in India. Indians in general are intrigued by the foreigners. So don’t be offended by unusual glares of appreciation or awe. Its just something that local people might not be used to.
Moreover, there is a basic curiosity in befriending foreigners. This is largely unharmful and does not necessarily have vested commercial interest. People like to talk to foreigners and will generally approach the male member’ to make a small conversation if initiated by a male, otherwise females will try to start conversation with their woman counterpart. This tactic is ingrained culturally and perhaps is largely due to the fact that no one wants to offend a couple by even remotely showing interest in their spouse or partner of opposite sex. In general people are possessive about the opposite sex family members and hence any derogatory or sexual comments about them might be considered highly offensive.
Some of the common terminology used in national language “Hindi’ are:
‘Namaste’ :– is salutation used for saying Hello
‘Shukriya’ : – Thank you.
‘Mera naam John hai” : – My mane is John
‘Mujhe bahut achha laga’ :– I liked it a lot
‘Bahut Sundar’ :– Very beautiful
‘Chai’ : – Tea
‘Anda’ : – egg
‘Kitne Paise’ :– How Much
‘Achha’ : – OK
‘Nahi’ : – No
‘Nahi’ Chahiye’ : – Don’t want it
‘Roti’ : – Indian bread made on gas stove
‘Naan’ : – Indian bread baked in oven

‘Roco’ : – To stop |
