examples of European paintings and sculpture, most famously the "Veiled Rebecca" by the Italian sculptor, Giovanni Maria Benzoni. Apart from this, one also comes across Chinese and Japanese art pieces.
Of special interest is the Jade Room containing priceless objects, which belonged to ancient Indian rulers such as the mogul king Aurangzeb, son of Shah Jehan and Tipu Sultan, the ‘tiger’ king of Mysore.
The visiting hours are 10 am to 5 pm everyday, except on Friday, when it is closed.
Hussain Sagar
This is the largest lake in the city and the city of Hyderabad spreads around it. Hussain Sagar bridges not the culturally disparate Hyderabad and Secunderabad, known as twin cities all over the country. It was a quiet and placid lake of 24 kilometres built by Hazrat Husain Shah Wali on a tributary of the river Musi during the time of that great builder Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah in 1562 to meet the water and irrigation needs of the city.
Lumbini Park
This is a new amusement park near Hussain Sagar. The landscaping here is a visual treat. A musically synchronized water fountain and a floral clock are major attractions here. Lumbini Park jetty is a major point for pleasure boating.
Open from Tuesday through Sunday (9 am –9 pm), this park has a musical fountain show at 6.30 pm and 8 pm.
Tank Bund
This is Hyderabad's most popular promenade. The Tank Bund dams the Hussain Sagar Lake. It is lined with 33 statues of famous personalities of the State. A monolith of Buddha was recently installed at the centre of the lake. This lake is the venue of many water sport events.
Birla Temple
Some food for the soul and a feast for the eyes, overlooking the Tank Bund, the Birla Mandir presents an arresting sight when illuminated in the evening. This magnificent structure is built entirely out of marble from Rajasthan; it stands atop the Kala Pahad, the twin hillock of the Naubat Pahad. (These “Pahads” or hillocks were places from where announcements used to be made during the olden days!).
Built by the Birla Foundation over a span of ten years, the main temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara, an incarnation of Vishnu, the Protector of the Hindu Trinity.
Birla Planetarium
In the heart of the city is the B.M. Birla Planetarium, one of the newest and the most modern in India. It is being developed into a centre for the study of astronomy.
The latest addition to the planetarium is the Dinosorium - a new wing which houses among other exhibits, 160 million years old mounted "Kotasaurus Yamanpalliensis", excavated in Adilabad district. Apart from this highlight, the Dinosaurium also has a collection of smaller fossils of dinosaur eggs, marine shells and fossilised tree trunks.
One among the most visited places in the city, the planetarium holds sky shows everyday at different timings in different languages.
It is closed on the last Thursday of the month from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm.
Nehru Zoological Park
This zoo is one of the largest zoos in Asia. Spread over 300 acres, it is home to over 3000 different species of birds and animals. Not to be missed is its unique nocturnal zoo, which houses animals not normally seen during the day.
Large recreational parks, gardens, a mini train and animal rides, make it an ideal spot for a picnic. This park is a must for nature lovers. It operates on weekdays between 8.30 am to 5 pm, and it is closed on Mondays.
Public Gardens
Originally called the Bagh-e-aam, it consists of well-laid out gardens. It also houses the imposing State Legislative Assembly building, the Jubilee Hall, the Jawahar Bal Bhavan, the Health Museum and the State Archaeological Museum.
Laad Bazaar
The street leading from Charminar to the square on the west called the Chowk, is known as Lad Bazaar. It is a shopping centre of the old city specialising in bridal ware. Here, you find the famous glass bangles of Hyderabad. Laad, in Hindi means, to pamper.
