Introduction : |
Hyderabad immediately brings to mind the famous Nizams, the Muslim rulers of Hyderabad, royalty that was a class apart. The Nizams introduced the now-famous culture, gentility and literature to the city, traces of which can still be easily seen in the city today.
Known for its rich history, culture, a varied heritage in crafts, arts and dance, bazaars, minarets and mosques, Hyderabad is the |

capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Attached to the city is its twin, Secunderabad, a part of Hyderabad, separated by a man-made lake, Husain Sagar. Hyderabad is also known as the city of pearls and lakes.
Some historical information would do us good. Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah of the Qutb Shahi dynasty founded the city on the banks of river Musi in 1590. This was relocation, done to relieve a water shortage the dynasty had undergone at their old head quarters at Golconda.
A popular theory that explains the origin of the city’s name suggests that Mohammed Quli fell in love with, and, consequently married, a local banjara (gypsy) girl, Bhagmati. He named the city Bhagyanagram after her. Upon her conversion to Islam, she changed her name to Hyder Mahal. Accordingly, the city’s name was changed to Hyderabad or the ‘city of Hyder.’
The city’s language and mannerisms still exude its rich and legendary past. The Nizams of Hyderabad were known to be one of the wealthiest royals of the past. The elegant buildings, marbled temples and monuments stand testimony to it. Now, emerging as the IT and Biotech hub of India, Hyderabad is the meeting place of different cultures and linguistic traditions.
The people of Hyderabad have developed their own distinctive culture that is a mix of the old Islamic culture and the Hindu traditions of the Andhra people.
