Monuments to See :
Goa, known for its unique heritage, envelopes a very calm, serene and a peaceful atmosphere which further accentuates the aesthetic beauty of its monuments. All the monuments described below are located in Old Goa.
1. Viceroy’s Arch

Viceroy from 1597-1600. It was an archway for the ships that bought new arrivals to Goa.
2. Gateway of Adil Shah’s Palace
This gateway is the only ruin that is left of Adil Shah’s palace which was also used as the viceroy’s residence from 1554 to 1695.
3. Church of St Cajetan
It was built in 1651 and is known for its splendid woodcarvings on the altar and pulpit.
4. Archaeological Museum This museum has the presence of an exquisite bronze statue of the poet Luis Vaz de Camoes holding his epic Os Luiadas.
5. Church of St Francis of Assisi
It was built in 1521 and is Old Goa’s most important churches. Its carved altar depicts crucified Jesus, four Evangelists, St Francis and Our Lady with baby Jesus.
6. Basilica de Bom Jesus
It was built in 1605 and is essentially known for the Tomb of St Francis Xavier. It was the first church to be elevated to the level of Minor Basilica, which was in 1946. It encompasses Doric, Corinthian, Ionic and Composite styles. The main altar decorated in gold depicts the infant Jesus under the protection of St Ignatius Loyola and to each side are subsidiary altars to Our Lady of Hope and St Michael. Also here stands the Chapel and Tomb of St Francis Xavier.
This church is open from Monday –Staurday, 9am to 6.30pm and on Sundays, from 10am to 6.30pm.
7. Se Cathedral
It is believed to be Asia’s largest church. The gilded altar has six amazing panels depicting the life of St Catherine of Alexandria.
8. Our Lady of the Rosary
It was built on top of the Holy Hill in 1526 by Alfonso de Albuquerque. He had vowed to build a church after watching the defeat of Yusuf Adil Shah from here in 1510.
9. The Chapel of St Catherine
It was built to celebrate the victory of Albuquerque’s victory in 1510. It served as Goa’s only cathedral until the Se Cathedral was built.
10. Royal Chapel of St Anthony
It is Portugal’s national saint St Anthony’s chapel who was also considered as the Captain of the army.
11. Convent of St Monica
It dates back to the 17th century and is Asia’s first Museum of Christian Art.
12. Church and Monastery of St Augustine
It is 151 feet high belfry and dominates the remains of once India’s largest church.
13. Church and Convent of St John of God
Built in 1685 this convent was erected by the people of St John of God to tend to the sick. It was rebuilt in 1953.
14. The Archbishop’s PalaceIt adjoins the Se Cathedral and is the last surviving civil building of the colonial Goa.
