The Red Fort:
Also popularly knows as its Hindi translation ‘Lal Qila’, this Fort with red sandstone walls was built by Emperor Shah Jahan. Located in Old Delhi just by Chandni Chowk, The Red Fort epitomizes the Mughal power reign in India. Even though Shah Jahan had never completely moved his capital to Delhi (or that time Shahjahanbad) , the Fort holds great importance and forms a part of the great Indian heritage, which is on display every

year on 15th August, the Indian Independence day, when the Prime Minister addresses the public from the Lahore Gate at the Red Fort.

The Fort is closed on Mondays, during other days its open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In the evenings there is a “Sound and Light Show” that is conducted at the premises. During the winters the show in Hindi starts at 6:00 p.m. and the English is at 7:30 p.m. Summer timing for Hindi and English shows are 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. respectively.

Jama Masjid:
Not very far from Red Fort lies the biggest mosque in India, ‘Jama Masjid’. Built by Shah Jahan, the mosque is great example of three-domed Mughal Mosque.
This imposing structure lies amidst a very busy marketplace, with one of Delhi’s

most famous non-vegetarian restaurant “Karims”. The views from Jama Masjid are spectacular and can be a photographer’s delight. You can view Lutyen’s design marvel when you carefully observe that Jama Masjid, Connaught Place and Parliament House are all in a straight line. There is no entry fee for Jama Masjid .However entry to the top of minaret is Rs.10, with unescorted women and bags not allowed.
Please ensure you follow the basic rules of a religious place in India, like removing your shoes, not wearing revealing clothes and showing common courtesy by following the rituals of the locals.

Rashtrapati Bhawan, Parliament House and India Gate:
All these fall in a circle of less than a 1Km diameter and hence we have them all clubbed together. It is here in this area of New Delhi that the Republic Day of India on 26th January is celebrated. A few weeks before the Republic day of India at New Delhi, the whole area is cordoned off , allowing minimal traffic movement in and around the India Gate area. Travelers need to keep that in mid when planning a trip around the time of the year.
Rashtrapati Bhawan is the official residence of the President of India. Built by the British during the days of the Raj, the area around and inside hosts foreign dignitaries and the Secretariat building. Also lies to the west of the Rashtrapati Bhawan is the sprawling ‘Mughal Gardens’. These gardens are open to general public only during the month of February and during some part of March.

Parliament House, as the name suggests hosts the two houses of the Indian Parliament – The Lok Sabha( the house of people) and the Rajya Sabha ( Council of states). Parliament House is a massive circular edifice, 560 feet (170.69 meters) in diameter. Its circumference is one-third of a mile or 536.33 meters and it covers an area of nearly six acres (24281.16 square meters). The open verandah on the first floor is fringed with a colonnade of 144 creamy sandstone columns—each 27 feet (8.23 meters) high. The building has twelve gates among which Gate No. 1 on the Sansad Marg is the main gate.
Off late the terrorist attack on the premise that took place in 2004, has resulted in increasing the security around the place.

India Gate at New Delhi is a monument dedicated to Indian army soldiers who died during the Word War I. This huge Arch has a lighted touch which burns there at all times in respect of the martyrs.
The area around India Gate is thronged by families in the evening, who are there generally for strolling around and enjoying the ‘ice-creams’ from the large number of vendors around the place. The evenings at India Gate in New Delhi are city dwellers delight, attracting a large number of locals to the area around.
