Chandigarh is also known for being the capital of two states, namely, Punjab and Haryana. Its high standard of living, high literacy levels,Rock Garden, Rose Garden, Golfers and lately a booming IT hub is envy of every Indian citizen. With over six hundred thousand people, this city boasts of greenery, wide & well laid out roads, large open spaces, amenities and beautiful people.
Chandigarh is very well connected to Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana and also forms a pit-stop for most of the travel to northern states of Himachal Pradesh or Jammu & Kashmir.
Being a capital of two states, it is also a Union Territory, which means that it also has an independent administration of its own that charters the legislation specific to the city.
‘The City Beautiful’ was the result of the dream of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister.
At the initiation ceremony of the city, Pandit Nehru remarked “The site chosen is free from the existing encumbrances of old towns and old traditions. Let it be the first expression of our creative genius flowing on our newly earned freedom. Let it be a new town symbolic of the freedom of India, unfettered by the traditions of the past and expression of the nation’s faith in the future. The new capital of Punjab will be christened as Chandigarh- a symbolic of the valiant spirit of the Punjabi’s, Chandigarh is rightly associated with the name of Goddess “Chandi – Shakti, or power’s”. Of course, this statement came at the time when Punjab and Haryana were both under one state.
