Bikaner can only be for the lover of the rustics, antiques and ethnics. Silver and imitation jewelry, hand stitched local wear, colorful beads, sequins with hand-block printed patterns and metal are enchanting.
Skilled artisans had been summoned from Herat (Afghanistan) by Raja Man Singh of Ajmer to train the local workers for carpet weaving. Carpets are exported world over for its technique and great designing.
‘PHAD PAINTING’ which is mainly red and green depicts the life of the local hero Pabuji is seen in most of the international homes and offices. Miniature paintings have inextricable design of intricate work depicted through love and war tales of kings.
The main shopping area lies around Kote Gate (King Edward Memorial Road). The Khadi Emporium at Mahatma Gandhi Road offers local blankets, rugs, carpets, wood carvings and lacquer work at reasonable prices. At the entrance of the fort, there is an excellent craft shop run by Urmul Trust. You find high quality items made by people of surrounding villages which benefits in improving health and education projects in these villages.
