Introduction : |
| Amritsar is the holy city for the Sikhs and one of the most prominent in the state of Punjab. The name ‘Amritsar’ means ‘pool of nectar’ which is a reference to the sacred tank ‘Sarovar’ built around the Golden Temple in the city. The city was founded by Guru Ram Das in 1577. The city is just like any other old Indian city, but the Golden Temple is an epitome of peace and tranquility - and your visit is not complete till you have been to the sacred Golden Temple. |

The city has seen a lot of turmoil during its history. After having been destroyed in 1761 by Ahmad Shah – the temple was rebuilt and in early nineteenth century was ornamented as we know it now by Maharaja Ranjit Singh – ‘the lion of
Punjab’. It also saw a blood bath in 1984 at the height of the terrorism problem in Punjab . It was during this time that the Sikh extremists had to be forcefully
flashed out of the Golden Temple premises by the Indian Army. This action was resented by the Sikh community at large, in which the temple was badly damaged, but things have been fine after that and the temple was repaired and restored to its original glory.
The people of the city of Amritsar are very warm and hospitable. You are bound to come across a great variety of authentic Punjabi food in the city. The language spoken is predominantly Punjabi which sounds very much like Hindi but people have a limited knowledge of English – enough to see you through if you have no knowledge of the local language.
It supports a population of just over a million in the city and 3 million in the district. Temperature here in summer is around 30-47 ◦c and in winter 0-17 ◦c.
There is no formal public transport but the cycle rickshaws and scooter rickshaws can take you wherever you want.
