Tips and Comment : |
- Private boats can be rented for short or long trips. They are located across the North Canal, opposite the boat jetty. It costs about Rs. 500 for a one-way ride to Kottayam. It is best to bargain directly with the boat owner, not someone who walks up to you.

- While hiring a Houseboat, you must first enquire if it is fitted with air conditioners and try to see the state of the boats yourself before agreeing on getting on them.
- There is available ,
through state run Kerala Tourism , a ranking system for the Houseboats. Although such higher quality ranking by State tourism will invariably result in assurance of high quality Houseboats but the unranked Houseboats also provide value for money by providing much cheaper options.
- You must try some of the Kerala Ayurvedic massages. They tend to be truly relaxing.
- It is advisable to go for loose long pants, as you might want to be protected from mosquito bites in the evening. Casual wear is fine but this is a small town and it is advisable to dress modestly.
- Do not leave your personal belongings unattended.
- Tipping is normal and most expect a tip of about 10% for any services rendered.
- Rules for visiting temples: Most temples do not permit the wearing of footwear inside the buildings. Shirts for men and pants for women are banned in some temples and allowed in some others. Where they are banned, men have to wear Mundus (local Indian traditional wear for men), and women, a sari or long skirts.
.
- It is advisable to drink only bottled mineral water everywhere in India.
