Champakulam
This is a waterlogged village, also known as the place of oldest angadi (market), Kalloorkkadu. A major attraction is the St. Mary Forane Church built in 427 A. D. It is famous for its beautiful mural paintings. In Champakulam, one can see Nadubhagum and Champakulam snake boats that take part in the annual snake boat races.

Krishnapuram Palace
At a distance of 47 km from Alleppey, this double storied palace holds one of the greatest murals in the entire state of Kerala. The mural, Gajendra Moksham, measures 14 feet by 11 feet. This 18th century palace was built during the reign of the Travancore monarch,
Marthanda Varma. Its gabled roofs, dormer windows, and narrow corridors, put together, are a typical and fine example of Kerala architecture. You will find a museum of antique sculptures, paintings and bronzes inside the palace.
Pathiramanal Island
Also known as Sands of night, this small island on the backwaters is a favorite rendezvous point of hundreds of rare migratory birds that fly in from different parts of the land. It lies between Thaneermukkom and Kumarakom and is accessible by boat only. The Vembanad Lake, stretching from Alleppey to Kochi, surrounds it. Boats to the island operate on Sundays from Muhamma and Kumarakom. A must-visit in case you are looking at a short break from your backwater boat cruise.
Kuttanad
Kuttanad is called the rice bowl of Kerala, owing to its wealth of paddy crops. This lies at the very heart of the backwaters. Kuttanad is very scenic with its shimmering waterways. It also has a rich crop of bananas, cassava and yams, which come with the rice bowl as accompaniments!
This is, perhaps, the only land in the world where farming is done below sea level.
Kumarakom
Kumarakom is the renowned resort village located at about 40 Kms from Alleppey. The village is a cluster of islands located on the Vembanad Lake and famous for its luxury resorts .The area of Kumarakom is surrounded with mangrove forests, low-lying paddy fields a, interspersed with coconut groves. With most luxury hotels of the backwater situated in this area , tourism is the major source or economic activity here.
St. Sebastian’s Church
In Arthunkal, 22km north of Alleppey, St. Sebastian’s Church is an important Christian pilgrim centre. To be a part of the annual festival Arthunkal Perunnal, the feast of the patron saint, you must visit in the month of January.
